The English betting industry is experiencing significant growth.

In the first quarter of 2024, the online gambling industry witnessed a significant rise of 35% in its turnover compared to the previous year. Moreover, the number of online accounts also experienced a notable surge of 19%, surpassing the threshold of 3.1 million.

An upsurge of 79% can be observed when comparing it to the initial quarter of 2020, a period when the majority of events accessible to English bettors were put on hold.

Experts anticipate that the sports betting industry will sustain its growth momentum in the upcoming quarter, primarily due to the impending Tokyo Olympics and the European Football Championship.

Since last year's lockdowns, the revitalized segment of casino poker, along with the proven appetite of the English population for betting on summer football tournaments, has contributed to a sustained channel shift in the gambling market. This shift is projected to result in the market surpassing 2 billion euros for the first time in 2024.

Facing the absence of casino games and a still challenging fiscal system for online gambling, future German licensees may find a small degree of comfort in the success of English operators who have managed to exploit the country's mass market. The prospects may not be much better, but at least there is some hope for success.

Online horse betting has also experienced significant growth, reaching a total of $481 million, reflecting a remarkable 60% surge in comparison to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

Health restrictions impacted approximately 40% of horse racing establishments, resulting in a 23% decrease in wagers made within the Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) network.

The casino poker segment was particularly notable, experiencing a 23% year-on-year revenue growth to reach 120 million euros.
