Reading our reviews: what they can and cannot tell you

Think of every ShoutMix page as a photograph. One of our writers sat down with a casino, a slot or a payment method on a certain date and boiled it down for Canadian readers. Photographs age. Below is a plain account of where our numbers originate, which of them go out of date fastest and what deserves a second look before any money leaves your account.

1. Our summary versus their small print

A review squeezes pages of conditions into a short paragraph. What binds you is the casino’s own wording on the day your account opens — never our paraphrase. When the two disagree, follow the casino, then tell us so the page can be put right.

Check it yourself: open the promotion’s rules on the operator’s site; look for the playthrough multiple, the bet cap and the expiry.

2. Offers have a short shelf life

Match percentages and spin counts are advertising copy, and advertising copy is rewritten constantly. Ontario adds a twist: the AGCO bars its licensed operators from promoting bonuses to Ontarians, so every deal you see here is the version aimed at the other provinces and territories.

Check it yourself: hold our number up against the casino’s current promotions tab before ticking the opt-in box.

3. Provinces, not Ottawa, set the rules

Ottawa issues no casino licence at all. Ontario’s market is open: the AGCO polices it and iGaming Ontario signs the operators. Alberta opened a licensed Albertan marketplace in July 2026. Everywhere else the provincial Crown lottery corporation is the only legal online seller. Many brands on ShoutMix answer to regulators abroad — Curaçao, Malta, Kahnawake. A Canadian who plays there commits no offence, yet has far less leverage if a dispute turns ugly.

Check it yourself: type the licence number into the regulator’s own search page rather than trusting a badge.

4. Minimum age

Nineteen is the threshold across most of the country; the bar drops to eighteen for residents of Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta. Nobody below their province’s threshold should be reading reviews here, and casinos confiscate winnings from under-age accounts.

Check it yourself: your province’s rule, since it is the only one that applies to you.

5. Cashier details

Deposit and withdrawal options are recorded as the cashier showed them to us. Your own bank, your province and the casino’s risk checks decide whether Interac or a card goes through for you. Payout windows are the operator’s promise, and document checks or a long weekend can stretch them. Fees are another blind spot: some card issuers book a casino deposit as a cash advance and charge interest from day one, which no reviewer can see from outside.

Check it yourself: send a modest first deposit and read the cash-out conditions before trusting a site with more.

6. Return-to-player and demos

An RTP percentage describes the studio’s default build of a game averaged over millions of spins. Operators may switch on a leaner build, and no percentage predicts tonight’s session. Our free demos stream from studios or aggregators and may behave slightly differently from the cash version. Demo credits are play money and never convert to cash.

Check it yourself: tap the “i” or paytable screen inside the casino lobby to see which build is loaded.

7. Shortlists are paid placements

Only casinos holding a commercial contract with our publisher make it onto a ShoutMix list, and the running order mirrors those contracts. Number one means the strongest deal, not a verdict on which site suits you. The money side is spelled out under About ShoutMix.

Check it yourself: compare several sources and search the casino’s name together with “complaint”.

8. Systems and the taxman

Our strategy pieces teach rules and odds; none of them can erase the house edge. Recreational winnings are generally tax-free in Canada, though the CRA may view a professional gambler otherwise. Read it all as background, never as the word of an accountant, lawyer or financial planner.

Check it yourself: speak to an accountant if gambling income matters to your finances.

9. Sites beyond ours

Articles sometimes point to other websites, and some of those links were bought by advertisers. ShoutMix has no say over such sites, what they claim or what they do with visitor data.

Check it yourself: skim the data policy of wherever a link lands you.

10. Errors and responsibility
